\"\"<\/a>This past weekend was the ‘Let’s Do This Ladies’ backpacking trip at Mt. Rodgers and the Grayson Highlands. One of my favorite places with my favorite people! For those wondering, the trip was named after the fun dance and motivating words of one of our tribe (sorry, no video) The trip was full of bubbles, ponies, longhorns, backcountry baking attempts and unexpected sunshine. I also tested out some of my gear for the Divide Ride for the first time.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>On Friday, we headed to the Grayson Highlands State Park Campground, where we reunited with the most awesome birthday girl ever! We promptly feasted on her venison burgers, tempting all the bears in the entire state. On Saturday, we woke to light showers and a ‘crisp’ breeze, and soon headed off in search of ‘wild’ ponies. The search was quickly deemed a success, though we made a hasty retreat when the male pony beside me became a little too excited. Fortunately his interests seemed to be focused on his four-legged companions. The sun soon burned through the haze and remained, making for a crispy crew by the end of the trip.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Our campsite for Saturday night had a great view, but presented a minefield of cow pies. We were soon greeted by the pie makers, who turned out to be menacing looking Longhorns. While they made pies, we tried our hands at baking a birthday cake. That reminds me: I still need to go clean that pot\u2026. We may have been a little overzealous with our baking fire as the outside of the cake, well, it’s fused to the pot. Fortunately, the inside, topped with frosting, was a tasty treat! We also mixed up some dough for the next morning’s cinnamon rolls. I slept with the dough in my sleeping bag (Longhorns kept watch for the bears) so it could rise overnight. About every 30 minutes the ziploc bag would pop open loudly from the gasses building up. Thank goodness I triple bagged it. In the morning we enjoyed some tasty cinnamon rolls, turned buns!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Among some of the gear I was trying out, were my ULA CDT Pack, Platypus Gravity Works water filter, arm warmers, leg warmers, and a compression shirt. The ULA pack felt great, even though I had it overloaded with cake mix and dough. The water filter made ‘pumping’ water a breeze. We filled up the water bladder, hung it from a tree, and let gravity do its thing while we went off to saunter with the ponies. Thanks again to ULA and Platypus for providing me with these items!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>This was also my first time trying some new ‘clothing’ that I’m considering for the trip, including a pair of Smart Wool arm warmers that I really like. Think ‘socks for your arms’ except that they’re tubes so your hands are free. I also tried some compression leg warmers and a compression thermal shirt. I’m undecided as to how I feel about these items. I’ll probably not use the shirt and am on the fence about the leg warmers. I’ll have to test them out while riding Skyline Drive this Monday. I’ll have a unicycling companion for that trip so stay tuned for shots of a real unicyclist – she has a whopping 36″ wheel! Till then!\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
