What a beautiful machine!<\/p>\n

I meant to post about the unicycle soon after it arrived, but I’ve basically been running around like a chicken with its head cut off and never got around to it. Anyway, she’s a beauty and I haven’t been able to stop staring at it and showing it off to all my friends. I think my new roommates were probably scratching their heads every time they saw me come through the hallway on the uni or walked by my door to see me just sitting on the uni (working on my balance). Thank you, Unicycle.com, for your help in putting this machine together and your participation with my project!<\/p>\n

With the input of Josh over at Unicycle.com, I decided to go with the Nimbus Oregon (not to mention that I just couldn’t resist the beautiful green color!) I initially had not realized that this frame was an option. I wanted to run a 29″ wheel, but the Oregon came with a 26″, albeit with a super fat tire. Josh pointed out that the huge tire effectively brings the outer diameter of the wheel to be about the same as a 29″ wheel. So, I had Josh build me two wheels. One with the BIG BIG tire, and also the 29″ one I will be using for the ride; both fit in the Oregon frame.<\/p>\n

After the fat tire, people usually notice the brakes and handlebars. The disk brake makes a world of difference going down hills; without it, my legs would be the brakes. The handlebar, too, is a huge help. By pushing and pulling on it, I can change my weight distribution on the seat. It also helps me stabilize the unicycle at higher speeds and gives me some leverage for turning the unicycle, something that can be hard to do when I have it loaded up with water and gear. Actually, it’s because of the handlebar (which also has a bar sticking out the rear) that I’m able to mount so much gear to the unicycle.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The way the Oregon frame is designed, in combination with the handlebar, lends itself to some very interesting gear mounting possibilities. I really wish I had more time to play around with ways to utilize the space. Unfortunately, I had about 2 days to develop my system and make the frame bags. I ended up using my tent poles (plus one extra) to create extra support structure below the handlebar. I have a 4 Liter bag in the front and two bags in the rear totaling about 8 Liters (so about 12 Liters all together. In super dry stretches, I can carry about 7 Liters of water in some of the bags mounted to the unicycle. That’s about 15 lbs of water off my back, but about 15 more pounds of unicycle that I’d have to ‘fight’. Hopefully I’ll very rarely have to carry that much water.<\/p>\n
