Thanks, Russ. Now I have \u2018John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt\u2019 stuck in my head. Last night at dinner, the topic of \u2018earworms\u2019 came up. I mentioned how lucky I\u2019ve been not to have any so far this trip. During my past hikes, I\u2019ve always had nursery rhymes get stuck in my head. Russ mentioned John Jacob Jingleheimersmidt, and of course, it was stuck in my head today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It feels like someone picked me up and dropped me in the desert today. As I rode through Bannack State Park, I became concerned about my water supply. Though the map showed a few creeks, not a drop was to be found in the arid landscape littered with sagebrush. As I stood on the side of the road during one of my snack\/seat breaks, a truck pulled up, and the occupants asked if I wanted some cold water. I accepted without hesitation. They even gave me a frozen bottle for later! A few miles later, I came across a cow pasture stream and filtered what was surely a mix of water and cow pee while I ate lunch.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Not long after leaving my lunch spot, I came across the cows. About 6 of them had slipped through a break in the fence and occupied the road\u2014these cows were utterly terrified of me and started panicking. Half of them found their way back through the hole in the fence. The other three ran all over the place, frantically trying to find their way back in. Unsuccessful, they took off down the road. I learned that a cow\u2019s run is about the same speed as a unicyclist\u2019s roll. After a bit, when they hadn\u2019t yet given up their flight, I backed off and eventually stopped altogether. They continued, stopping about a quarter mile down the road. I resumed riding, and as I approached the cows, they fled again, ignoring my assurance that I wasn\u2019t after them. They were tiring out and slowing down. One managed to hop the fence into a new pasture, where a curious herd watched the scene unfold with much interest. After another few hundred yards, one of the remaining two gave up from exhaustion and huddled against the fence in fear as I passed. It was down to me, the last remaining cow, and an oncoming car. As we converged, the cow found a private drive to turn onto and took a flying leap over the cattle guards. I\u2019ve never seen a cow jump like that before. The woman driving the car shook her head and laughed as she drove by. I mean unicycles and flying cows\u2026 I was shaking my head and laughing, too.<\/p>\n<\/div>
