At some point today, I crossed the 1,000-mile mark. I feel like it, too. I also finished up my brief stint in Idaho and moved on to Wyoming.
As I packed up this morning, I could hear the sounds of cows on the move. It didn’t take me long to find them once I got going. The chase was on. A large group was on the trail and, as usual, fled. They seem to think it’s a good idea to stick to the trail instead of running off to the side. We approached another group, and they joined in. Even though they were off on the sidelines, they felt compelled to join in the chase and started running up to the trail, entering through corridors between the shrubs. Cows were running into each other, and suddenly, I found myself right in the middle of the mayhem with cows coming in next to and behind me. I stopped in fear of being trampled.
Soon after, a second cow chase ensued, which I caught in this bumpy video clip.
The last part of the rail trail was very scenic. I rode high above the winding Warm River, peering down at the fisherpeople below. The trail ended at a very active campground, and I found myself back on pavement once again. Here’s a wobbly video from a slightly sketchy but beautiful stretch of trail.
After leaving the rail trail, I couldn’t quite seem to get the miles in that I had hoped to. The riding wasn’t difficult, but I just didn’t have the energy I needed. That and the seat bothered me to the point where I almost stopped early. Actually, I did stop but decided to put the makeshift faux sheepskin saddle cover back on to see if it would help. I’ve been using it on and off since Lima and can’t tell if it helps. When I put it on this afternoon, it made a world of difference. Too bad it couldn’t help out with my jello legs.

As I struggled to get to camp, I was lucky to narrowly miss some intense-looking storms. I stopped a few times to look at the crazy clouds developing all around me and consider my plan of action. It was as if someone turned a big vacuum on overhead. Dust from the road was getting sucked straight up into the sky. Uh oh, I just heard a rumble in the distance…
